Do you know Pepper?
Pepper is a humanoid robot capable of recognizing the principal human emotions and interacting proactively with people. It can recognize your face, speak, hear you and move around autonomously. Pepper is also able to interpret the words a person uses, as well as non-verbal signs such as a nod of the head.Pepper, developed by Japanese technology corporation SoftBank is intended »to make people happy«, facilitate relationships and have fun with people.Among other stores in Japan more than 140 SoftBank Mobile stores are using Pepper as a new way of welcoming, informing and amusing their customers. The cruise company Costa Crociere has taken five Robots on-board to entertain its passengers. They not only provide the guests with up-to-date information, but are also able to detect how they are currently feeling. Pepper is also currently being used as a receptionist at several offices in the UK and is able to identify visitors with the use of facial recognition, send alerts for meeting organizers and arrange for drinks to be made. If you know Pepper you might also know Paul, developed by Fraunhofer-Instutute. In distinction from Pepper it can not only speak and explain products but also guide you through the store. On thing that makes Paul so special is that it can learn by experience. Like other advices that process language, the more you interact by talking the more they understand. It only needs patience and a good software. No wonder that there are multiple application possibilities of humanoid robots. E.g. Nao, the smaller brother of Pepper in China is carrying the grocery to peoples home. A Munich hotel uses him as a concierge and it is always a welcome guest cruising around at fairs. Well, we don’t think that all these Peppers can substitute a charming shop assistant where you feel individually treated. Nevertheless it can be a good assistant to the shop assistants.
